Visit the Santa Elena Mummies Cultural Center and Artistic Museum, where you can learn about the history of the municipality, its products and handcrafts, the cultural exhibitions and shows taking place there, and the most amazing, the Santa Elena mummies, name given to the bodies found at San Mateo Church, located aside.
During your visit, you can walk along three halls with diverse items and murals about municipality’s history, details of the region’s attractions, like the archeological sites and cenotes, among others.
One of the main museum’s attractions is a Mayan tomb located in one of the museum’s halls, where you can see a skeleton and Mayan objects surrounding it. The main attraction is located in the last hall, four children’s mummies found in 1980 when the church was being refurbished. According to the information of the museum, there were twelve mummies found, some of them were sent to Mérida to perform studies, and some others were returned to the communal graves, and just four are exhibited. At the end, you may buy a handicraft made by locals.
