Mamules are a handmade bread, baked in a traditional stone oven with firewood. Its main ingredients are flour, egg, lard, and a delicious homemade filling. The Teyer family is the one who makes this unique bread in the region, and they have the original recipe that has been passed down for 127 years. Currently, one of the sons, Juan Teyer, along with his wife Adelaida, continues the production and commercialization of mamules in Tekax. They show part of the baking process and conclude the experience with a tasting of the dessert. Some may associate this bread with romance, seeing as when a man would gift mamules to a lady, as it was believed to signify his interest in her. If the lady was also interested and accepted the gift, it was expected that they would become a couple and eventually marry. Visit Tekax and try this exquisite bread!
